Creating hardware is a serious investment — especially when it comes to smart appliances packed with features and multilingual interfaces. For Electrolux, we helped de-risk that investment by running a usability study for their next-generation washing machines, focusing on Thai and Vietnamese users.
To simulate the real-world experience without building a full prototype, we engineered a clever setup: a large touchscreen paired with a 3D-printed knob that mimicked the physical machine. This setup gave us the flexibility to test multiple interface variations quickly and cost-effectively.
Using eye-tracking tools and Tobii glasses, we observed where users hesitated, struggled, or misunderstood the controls — turning those pain points into design improvements before the first machine rolled off the line.
